How tilt and turn windows work

One sash, one handle, two entirely different openings. The mechanism is European standard and the logic behind it is worth understanding before you specify a whole elevation of them.

Two modes from one handle

Handle horizontal, the sash swings inward on side hinges like a door — full opening, maximum airflow, and the whole aperture is clear. Handle vertical up, the same sash tilts inward from the bottom on its top edge, leaving a controlled gap at the head.

The tilt position is the one that gets used daily: it ventilates in rain, it is secure enough to leave while you are out, and it does not put a swinging sash into the room.

The egress consequence

A tilt-and-turn used in turn mode clears the opening completely and can serve as an egress window. In tilt mode it cannot — the sash sits across the head.

This matters when specifying a bedroom. A single tilt-only unit, with no turn mode, cannot be used for egress at any size. If an opening is designated for escape, confirm the operator has a turn mode before anything else.

When not to specify one

The sash opens into the room, so anything in the swing path is a problem: a kitchen sink with a tap under the window, a desk against the wall, interior shutters or blinds that cannot clear it. Casements that push outward avoid this entirely.

Tilt and turn also costs more than a fixed lite for the same aperture, so glazing an entire elevation with operable units where only two need to open is money spent on hardware nobody will touch.

Can a tilt and turn window be used as a fire escape?

In turn mode yes, because the sash swings fully clear of the opening. In tilt mode no. A tilt-only unit with no turn mode cannot be used for egress at any size. Confirm the operator before you size the opening.

Do tilt and turn windows open inward or outward?

Inward, in both modes. That is the main practical constraint: the sash needs clear space inside the room, which rules out openings above a sink with a tall tap, or where interior blinds or shutters sit tight to the frame.
