Signature Bi-Fold Door 90

A folding door that concertinas its panels to one or both sides, clearing the opening almost entirely. Top-hung running gear carries the weight so the floor track stays low, and EPDM weather seals with a thermally broken frame keep the closed position tight.

Overview

A folding outswing door: the leaves are hinged to one another and concertina to one side, both sides or into a corner, so that when it is open the wall is gone rather than merely slid aside. It can be built to open from the left, the right or the centre, and a folding run can be specified as a pass-through window serving an outdoor kitchen or bar. Configurations are always designated left to right as seen from outside.

It differs from the sliding doors in the range in what it does with the panels rather than how much glass it can carry. A slider always leaves at least one panel-width of glass in the opening; this clears the whole run. The trade-off is leaf size: individual panels are between 17 11/16" and 37 3/8" wide and between 50 13/16" and about 118" tall, so a wide opening is made from many narrow leaves rather than a few large ones. Runs go from three panels at 6 to 8 ft of opening up to twelve panels at 28 to 33 1/2 ft, with overall heights from 4 1/4 ft to 10 ft, and the panel split is specified with the stack — 3+1, 5+1, 3+3, 7+3, 5+5 and so on — so a traffic door can be left in the run without unfolding the whole wall.

The frame is the 90 mm class, 3 9/16" across the head, which is where the number comes from. Weight is carried at the top by guide rollers in a 75 mm head assembly and at the bottom by load-bearing rollers running on a stainless steel rail in a 52 mm frame, with a 60 mm bottom sash above it. The build-up is a thermally broken aluminium section with a thermal barrier strip, EPDM weather stripping, polystyrene foam, silicone-sealed glazing beads and a warm-edge spacer. Glazing is a 6+12+6 double or a 5+9+5+9+5 triple, argon-filled and low-E coated: NFRC figures printed for this door are U 0.39 with SHGC 0.21 double-glazed and U 0.30 with SHGC 0.16 triple-glazed.

Two on-floor sills are offered. The low-threshold sill is 131 mm wide and 85 mm overall with 19 mm ramped lips on both faces, and is designated accessible and wheelchair accessible; the drainage sill is 90 mm wide over a 13 mm threshold lip and takes water away rather than ramping over it. Corner folds turn 90 degrees: an external angle fold opens outward with the screen inside and can be combined in any leaf split, 7+2, 4+2 or 5+3 among them, while a negative corner fold is only available as 4+4. Handles and hinges are by SAVIO in white, grey and black with CMECH hinge and flush handle hardware, running on precision bearings. Where the folding leaves stack into a collection box, its structural capacity has to be verified against a maximum load of 220.462 lb — 100 kg.

Mounting and frame options

The frame type decides the rough-opening detail, the flashing and how much of the existing wall has to come out. Four are available; tell us the wall build-up and we will specify which one your opening needs.

New construction
Installation flange, 1/2" (1 3/8" optional)

The standard new-construction frame. The flange laps the sheathing so the unit sets and seals in one operation.

A 1 3/8" flange is available where the cladding build-up needs the extra reach.

Flush fin frame — for stucco

Installs over an existing aluminum window frame, so the stucco exterior is left intact. No cutting back and repatching.

Available on selected window types — ask us which of your openings can take it before you price the stucco work.

Replacement
No-flange frame (drill-through)

For full removal, when the existing frame is rotten or damaged and has to come out entirely.

Sets into the existing rough opening, and arrives with the through-the-jamb holes pre-drilled and the screws supplied.

Galvanized metal straps

Straps fix to the frame, which lets the unit sit anywhere in the depth of the wall cavity rather than at a fixed setback.

Installs from the interior, and works for both new construction and replacement.

Full CAD details for any of these are available on request for your wall assembly.

Factory-joined combinations for large openings

Multi-unit combinations are joined in the factory and delivered as one assembly, so the joint is made under shop conditions instead of on a scaffold. The joining mullion is 1 1/8" (28 mm) wide and comes in three reinforcement grades, chosen by the height of the window it has to carry. The system is covered by a US patent.

Suggested window heightJoint width
up to 9 ft1 1/8" (28 mm)
9 to 11 ft1 1/8" (28 mm)
11 to 13 ft1 1/8" (28 mm)

Combinations arrive partly or fully assembled depending on size and shipping method. Tell us the opening and we will confirm which grade your height needs and how the unit will be split for transport, before you price the crane time.

Performance & Certifications

NFRC certified performance

Certified figures from the NFRC Certified Products Directory — the source a U.S. building department will check. This window is certified separately as a fixed lite and as an operable lite, so both are shown: the operable sash carries the hardware and the operating joint, which costs a little thermal performance.

Exterior finish

The exterior is extruded aluminum cladding, which is why the finish schedule matters more here than the colour chart on a vinyl window: it is a powder coat on structural extrusion, not a surface tint.
